Grace Foods

GraceKennedy Limited was founded on February 14, 1922 by Dr. John J. Grace and Mr. Fred William Kennedy. Prior to the founding of GraceKennedy these two gentlemen worked for Grace Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of W.R. Grace & Company of New York City, New York.

In the United States a brief post-war economic boom which lasted from 1918 until the summer of 1921 was followed by an equally brief but sharp recession. Insolvencies tripled between 1919 and 1921. W.R. Grace and Co. of New York felt the pressure and decided to divest its Jamaican branch. Dr. John Grace realized that Grace Limited in Jamaica was not itself a failing concern but that it was being divested in order to relieve the pressure from the parent company in New York. He decided to keep it. Fred W. Kennedy, who recommended that James Moss-Solomon, then with United Fruit Company, be invited to join the new firm as Accountant, backed his decision. Like Kennedy, Moss-Solomon was of Jamaican stock.

Thus on February 14, 1922, St. Valentine’s Day and Fred William Kennedy’s Mother’s Birthday, a new firm, Grace, Kennedy & Company Limited was launched on the successes of its predecessor. The Memorandum of Association gave the Company room to carry on a general mercantile and commercial business and any other business, manufacturing or otherwise, as its Directors deemed desirable ‘…. To enhance the value of or to render profitable any of the company’s property or rights’. It was a widely permissive document. Subject to alteration or addition as the Directors might deem expedient. The Capital of the Company was £25,000 divided into 250 shares of £100 each, with power from time to time to increase the capital.

The first Directors Meeting of GraceKennedy Limited was held on February 15, 1922, at the offices of Cargill, Cargill and Dunn, solicitors, 4 Duke Street, Kingston. Those present were Dr. John Grace, Governing Director; Fred William Kennedy, appointed a Director. The meeting appointed the Colonial Bank as the Company’s bankers; G.F. Wallace, secretary; James Moss- Solomon, accountant; and Cargill, Cargill and Dunn, solicitors, instructed to retain H. M. Radcliffe as counsel. The Company’s cheques were to be honored on the signature of the Governing Director alone, or together with that of Fred William Kennedy; and an agreement was to be concluded between the Company and Mr. Walter Fletcher for the management of the former Montego Bay branch of Grace, Limited, which had also been acquired by GraceKennedy Limited. The former Grace. Limited branch in St. Ann’s Bay had been closed and was not purchased byGraceKennedy Limited.

Caribbean Airlines

Caribbean Airlines was incorporated in the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago on 27 September 2006, beginning flight operations on 01 January 2007 with 128 weekly departures to 10 markets operating five Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Caribbean Airlines initiated simplified one-way fares inclusive of taxes and fees that provided flexible fare combinations and extended stay options. The new fare program also featured a permanent discounted fare, senior citizen discounts and no change fees for students. We launched a Web check-in feature allowing passengers to check in for flights and print boarding passes from the comfort of their homes, offices or anywhere with an internet connection.

Setting the pace for its future, Caribbean Airlines operated 93.9% of its flights on time during its begin operational phase through February 2007, surpassing the aviation industry on-time performance standard of 85% and the airline’s January 2007 average of 92%. Caribbean Airlines also exceeded industry standards with an impressive lost baggage rate of 0.7 for January (less than one bag lost per thousand passengers) and 1 bag per thousand for February 2007.

In 1983, three young enterprising Guyanese – John La Rose, Terrence Pariaug and Glen Khan, saw a need to reconnect West Indians who were living overseas, with their families and friends in their respective homelands in the Caribbean and Guyana. The Caribbean communities in the United States of America, Canada and the UK needed a reliable channel to send supplies, gifts and various other items to their families ‘back home’. Thus was born LAPARKAN which is an acronym from the last names of the three entrepreneurs.

Laparkan opened its first office in Toronto, Canada in summer of 1983. The word quickly spread throughout the Caribbean Diaspora and soon there was a demand for offices in other locations. Through hard work and a focused approach, Laparkan quickly established offices in Guyana, New York, Miami and the United Kingdom. The response from the overseas communities was very positive and supportive and within six years, Laparkan had additional offices or agencies opened in Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica and Barbados.

By the early 90’s Laparkan fortified and consolidated its markets and planned another push into other Caribbean territories such as Antigua, St. Lucia, Grenada, Surinam and St. Vincent to name a few. With continuous success and growth, Laparkan offered its uniquely Caribbean flavored business brand into the larger markets of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. As Laparkan developed its Caribbean presence, it simultaneously expanded its North America operations. Laparkan offices flourished within the communities that they served and became an integral part of their customer base. Today Laparkan can be found in the midst of the Caribbean communities across the USA and Canada.

With structured growth in place, Laparkan turned its interest to diversification and to the acquisition of major companies in Guyana. Guinness is a popular Irish dry stout that originated in the brewery of Arthur Guinness (1725–1803) at St. James’s Gate, Dublin. Guinness is one of the most successful beer brands worldwide. It is brewed in almost 60 countries and is available in over 120.

Arthur Guinness started brewing ales from 1759 at the St. James’s Gate Brewery, Dublin. On 31 December 1759 he signed a 9,000 year lease at £45 per annum for the unused brewery.Ten years later, on 19 May 1769, Guinness first exported his ale: he shipped six-and-a-half barrels to Great Britain.

“Stout” originally referred to a beer’s strength, but eventually shifted meaning toward body and colour.

Arthur Guinness started selling the dark beer porter in 1778. The first Guinness beers to use the term were Single Stout and Double Stout in the 1840s. Throughout the bulk of its history, Guinness produced ‘only three variations of a single beer type: porter or single stout, double or extra and foreign stout for export’. Porter was also referred to as “plain”, as referenced in the famous refrain of Flann O’Brien’s poem “The Workman’s Friend”: “A pint of plain is your only man.
